2001: A Space Travesty (DVD)
$14.94
This movie, "2001: A Space Travesty", will not be confused with Stanley Kubrick's 1968 science fiction classic with a similar name. U.S. Marshall Richard 'Dick' Dix, played by Leslie Nielsen, jumps into action when President Bill Clinton, played by Damien Masson, is kidnapped and taken to Moon Base Vega as a hostage. Dix does the only thing he could do. He puts on a space suit and boards a vessel bound for the moon to rescue the President. Back on Earth, a clone of the President has replaced the President, and the clone is causing more havoc than usual.

On the spaceship, the onboard computer is not named HAL, but is named SAL. And SAL has a voice like a character from the movie "The Godfather", and SAL dresses like he is a character from "The Godfather".

This Canadian/German co-production was originally titled "2000.1: A Space Travesty". It was filmed in 2000, and it when straight to home video. It was finally shown on the Comedy Central network on January 13, 2002 to make its official American debut.

Airplane! ["Don't Call Me Shirley!" Edition] (DVD)
$10.99
This spoof of the Airport series of disaster movies relies on ridiculous sight gags, groan-inducing dialogue, and deadpan acting -- a comedy style that would be imitated for the next 20 years.  Airplane! pulls out all the clichés as alcoholic pilot Ted Striker (Robert Hays), who's developed a fear of flying due to wartime trauma, boards a jumbo jet in an attempt to woo back his stewardess girlfriend (Julie Hagerty).  Food poisoning decimates the passengers and crew, leaving it up to Striker to land the plane, with the help of a glue-sniffing air traffic controller (Lloyd Bridges) and Striker's vengeful former captain (Robert Stack), who must both talk him down.  Along the way, we meet a clutch of stock disaster movie passengers like the guitar-strumming nun, a sick little girl, a frightened old lady, and two African-American travelers whose jive has to be subtitled.  Leslie Nielsen portrays the plane's doctor, launching a new phase of the actor's career that carried him through the next two decades in several similarly comedic roles.  The trio of directors Jim Abrahams, Jerry Zucker, and David Zucker responsible for the film would eventually go on to solo careers, but not before making Top Secret! and Ruthless People.  ~ Perry Seibert, Rovi

Backstairs at the Whitehouse (DVD)
$59.99
Based on the best-selling memoirs of Lillian Rogers Parks, the NBC miniseries Backstairs at the White House traces over five decades of American political history as witnessed from the vantage point of the servants' quarters.  Played by Tania Johnson as a teenager and by Leslie Uggams as an adult, Lillian Rogers Parks served for 52 years as a maidservant at the White House.  Though crippled early on with polio, Lillian diligently and loyally stuck to her duties -- and her own rock-solid set of principles and ideals -- through eight highly different Presidential administrations, often (and occasionally reluctantly) acting as friend and confidante to the First Lady of the moment.  The large and stellar cast included a number of top-rank film and TV actors, obviously having the time of their lives impersonating such presidents as William Howard Taft, Woodrow Wilson, Warren G. Harding, Calvin Coolidge, Herbert Hoover, Franklin Roosevelt, Harry S. Truman, and Dwight D. Eisenhower, and their respective wives.  Also in the cast were several African-American veterans from the landmark TV miniseries Roots.  Earning 11 Emmy Award nominations, the nine-hour Backstairs at the White House was seen in five installments from January 29 to February 19, 1979.  ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

Two macabre masters - writer Stephen King and director George A. Romero - conjure up five shocking yarns, each a virtuoso exercise in the ghouls-and-gags style of classic '50s horror comics.  A murdered man emerges from the grave for Father's Day cake.  A meteor's ooze makes everything ... grow.  A professor selects his wife as a snack for a crated creature.  A scheming husband plants two lovers up to their necks in terror.  A malevolent millionaire with an insect phobia becomes the prey of a cockroach army.  Add the spirited performances of a fine cast (Hal Holbrook, Adrienne Barbeau, Leslie Nielsen, Ted Danson, E.G. Marshall and King himself) and the ghoulish makeup wizardry of Tom Savini.  Let the Creepshow begin.

Lt. Frank Drebin of Police Squad is back in High-Definition!  Catch all of the wacky misadventures with Priscilla Presley, OJ Simpson and that beaver!

David Zucker--of the Zucker-Abrahams-Zucker creative troika behind Airplane! and television's Police Squad!--directed this 1988 feature film based on the latter show.  Leslie Nielsen returns to his old TV role of Lt. Frank Drebin, the deadpan idiot with a detective's badge.  The reinvention of the failed series as a theatrical feature seems to have inspired everyone involved to make a pretty funny movie, and the jokes gather a momentum that lasts until the final act.  Ricardo Montalban is a perfect foil as a villain whose aquarium is being invaded by Drebin during routine questioning, and George Kennedy is delightful in a self-parodying part as an earnest but obtuse lawman.  There's a hilarious bit when Drebin--wearing a live police wire while going to the bathroom--can be overheard over the loudspeakers at a speech given by a flustered mayor (Nancy Marchand).  Yes, that's O.J. Simpson as a detective who ends up on the wrong side of numerous Drebin blunders. --Tom Keogh

It's more of Leslie Nielsen's Lt. Frank Drebin, the bumbling cop from the old Police Squad! television series.  This time, Drebin uncovers a plot--led by supervillain Robert Goulet!--to sabotage America's energy policy.  The jokes don't stick as well as those of the first film (Naked Gun: From the Files of Police Squad!), but there are some very funny slapstick moments, including several involving former First Lady Barbara Bush (played by an actress, of course). --Tom Keogh

Naked Gun 33 1/3, The
DVD $13.69

The usual way of the world is that sequels amount to thinner and thinner carbon copies of the original.  But not in the case of Naked Gun movies, which only seemed to get funnier with each new entry.  This third episode in the series finds Lieutenant Frank Drebin (Leslie Nielsen) retired from his police squad and married to the woman of his dreams (Priscilla Presley).  But he is pressed back into action to infiltrate a group of terrorists who plan to blow up the Oscars.  The filmmakers make hay with spoofs of prison films and, particularly, of the Oscars themselves, in an award-show send-up that includes such real-life stars as Raquel Welch and Pia Zadora--and Drebin being mistaken for Phil Donahue.  The takeoff on the dreadful production numbers that always drag out the Academy Awards will have you howling. --Marshall Fine

Spy Hard [Wide Screen]
DVD $9.99

The first of several sight gag and slapstick-rich comedies he produced without the team of Jerry Zucker, David Zucker, and Jim Abrahams, this lowbrow comedy from executive producer and star Leslie Nielsen suffers by comparison to his work with the ZAZ team.  Nielsen plays Dick Steele, secret agent WD-40, called out of retirement to stop the world-conquering plans of his old nemesis, General Rancor (Andy Griffith), an armless madman determined to avenge himself upon Steele (who is responsible for Rancor's lack of appendages).  With the help of Russian agent Veronique Ukrinsky (Nicolette Sheridan), Steele prepares to battle Rancor at his tropical island lair, where the daughter of Steele's long-ago love is being held captive.  Along the way, such films as True Lies (1994), Speed (1994), Jurassic Park (1993), Pulp Fiction (1994), and Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid (1969) are spoofed. Wrongfully Accused

DVD $41.93

With the success of There's Something About Mary, the brothers Farrelly would seem to have inherited the dumb-comedy crown from the various talents who made Airplane! and its many descendants: Top Secret!, The Naked Gun, Hot Shots!. For the most part, that's true, but as Wrongfully Accused proves, there's a bit of life in the old shtick. Pat Proft, a screenwriter on The Naked Gun series and Hot Shots!, makes his directorial debut with this farce, which stars--surprise, surprise--Leslie Nielsen in a parody of the feature version of The Fugitive. More than that: Proft piles on joking references to a host of other dramas, including Casablanca, Mission: Impossible, and Braveheart. While the persistence of these inter-movie gags can wear a viewer down a bit, the fact is some of the silly stuff really does hit its target. If the progeny of Airplane! were to end with this movie, it would be a worthy way to say farewell to a once-good idea. The DVD includes trailers, a game, Dolby, audiovisual production notes, cast interviews, biographies and filmographies, English and French soundtracks, and English, French, and Spanish subtitles. With Kelly LeBrock, Richard Crenna, Sandra Bernhard, and Michael York. --Tom Keogh
